BROWNSVILLE (51) – 51 students thinking about future job opportunities took advantage of a unique chance to polish their interview skills at TSC’s Interview Practicum held at Jacob Brown Auditorium.

The students took part in mock job interviews with representatives from local businesses.

“Some financial institutions here, locally, you have TVC, the Texas Veterans Commission, UTRGV, the City of Brownsville and Cameron County as well, along with the Workforce Solutions Cameron too,” said Josue Silguero, TSC’s Director of Career and Employment services, which organized the event.

TSC Board of Trustees Chairwoman Adela Garza took part in the event as an interviewer. As a business owner, she took joy in offering advice to a student who is seeking a business degree.

“I told him when you work for Corporate America, it’s a different set of rules than when you establish your own business,” Garza said. “In every job you have, youhave totake your heart with you, your compassion, and your professionalism. And that follows you forever.”

Jennifer Sanchez, a first-year student in TSC’s Child Development Early Childhood (CDEC)programwas grateful for the advice she received.

“I thought it was really interesting,” Sanchez said.“It wasreally good. It did help me for what potential employers would say in an interview.”

Sanchez was interviewed by RustyBrechot, Cameron County Market President for Lone Star National Bank.

“Something he did say was that my greatest strength is me, how I am, how I present myself, and how I stay honesttomyself,” Sanchez added.

“Everyone is a little bit nervous when they do something like this,Brechotsaid. “If you can break that in the beginning, you’llend up with a wonderful interview andyou’llget to know the truth. I think a lot of what we talked about as well is being honest and having confidence. You know, all these different things, as well as what is on paper.”

Nadia Sanchez, who is also in the CDEC program, hopes to one day be a director for an early childhood center. She says the event also helped her learn more about how she can improve for real-world interviews.

“I was trying to calm down, but still, I was nervous,” Sanchez said. “Trying to work on my body movements and they said my voice was a little lower. So, try to raise my voice.”

The event offered former TSC students a chance to give back to the institution that helped set their educational foundation.  Rafael Vela and MariaRoussett, who work for Workforce Solutions Cameron, took part in the event as interviewers. Vela andRoussettearned credits at TSC before embarking on their careers.

“I was happy to do it,” said Vela, who is Workforce Solutions Cameron’s Chief Executive Officer. “The experience was gratifying and it keeps you grounded. Because if you’re in the workforce, you know, I rep the workforce and our team, sometimes we get caught up with the day-to-day. This reconnected me with the whole reason we do the work in the first place.”

Roussett, a StudentHireAbilityNavigator for Workforce Solutions Cameron, has worked with TSC students in various programs in the past.

“I love this institution,” saidRoussett. “When I first graduated from high school, I came here and it gave me my basic training that I needed to start my career.”

Roussett, who graduated from Texas Woman’s University with a degree in social work, was impressed by the preparation methods of the students she interviewed.

“If something is not clear, the students were letting me know that they do research and study policies, study data, study how things have been done before,”Roussettadded.

In addition tomockjob interviews, participants were also given an opportunity to take professional headshots. They also enjoyed sweet bread, coffer and water provided by the Brownsville Community ImprovementCorproation(BCIC).

51 students looking to sharpen their interview skills and boost their confidence are invited to attend the Mock Interview Practicum hosted by the TSC Career and Employment Services Department on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Jacob Brown Auditorium.

This hands-on workshop gives students the opportunity to practice real interview scenarios with industry professionals in a supportive and professional setting. Participants will answer common interview questions while receiving constructive feedback from professionals who regularly conduct hiring interviews.

The event is designed to help students build confidence, strengthen communication skills, and better prepare for internships and future careers. Students will walk away with valuable insights on how to present themselves professionally and make a strong impression during real job interviews.

“This workshop gives students the chance to experience what a real interview feels like before they walk into one that could impact their future,” said Carol L. Sandoval, Coordinator of Career and Employment Services at 51. “By practicing with industry professionals and receiving constructive feedback, students can identify their strengths, improve their responses, and gain the confidence they need to succeed.”

Josue A. Silguero, Director of Career and Employment Services says the event is part of the department’s ongoing efforts to prepare students for the workforce.

“Our goal is to connect students with professionals who can provide real-world insight and guidance,” Silguero said. “The Mock Interview Workshop allows students to refine their interview skills, learn what employers expect, and leave feeling more prepared to pursue career opportunities.”

Students interested in improving their interview skills and gaining professional feedback are encouraged to attend.

TSC spring career fair provides students, community with job opportunities /news/2022/06/tsc-spring-career-fair-provides-students-community-with-job-opportunities/ Tue, 07 Jun 2022 21:21:21 +0000 /news/?p=171 The post TSC spring career fair provides students, community with job opportunities appeared first on 51 News.

This year’s 51 Career Fair is being hailed a success with nearly 40 employers that were available and ready to accept resumes and hire TSC students, graduates and community members, alike.

Carol Sandoval, TSC student services specialist for the Office of Career and Employment Services, said she is happy to finally be able to host this career fair in person since the beginning of the pandemic, especially as one of the college’s signature events.

TSC Career Fair 2022

“The purpose of this career fair is to give our soon-to-be-graduates and students the opportunity to network and have conversations with our industry partners,” said Sandoval. “Although we were having virtual career fairs, there’s nothing like an in-person event to prepare our students for employment.”

The career fair hosted various employers such as Doctor’s Hospital at Renaissance, Harlingen Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Brownsville and Los Fresnos school districts, IDEA Public Schools, SteelCoast, Advance Auto Parts and military and law enforcement agencies.

For TSC Respiratory Care student Alejandro Bazan, he found some potential employers.

“It’s great that TSC gives us, as students, the opportunity to network with possible employers, ask them questions and gain insight,” said the 26-year-old. “There were many perfect possibilities for me and my classmates with health care companies being well represented at this career fair.”

For Brownsville Independent School District Adult Education student and Brownsville community member Zoriea Castillo, TSC’s Career Fair is something that will benefit her and her family in the long run.

“There were plenty of great opportunities for us to take advantage of at TSC’s Career Fair,” said Castillo. “I’m already preparing to submit applications to a few places, and by hopefully gaining employment, this will help me support my family and come out ahead. Thank you TSC, this is an exciting moment.”

Sandoval explained that a successful event is when her department hears positive feedback from students and community members about opportunities they find during the career fair, so knowing that people were applying and finding positions that fit their needs is rewarding.

“Our ultimate goal here at TSC is to create more opportunity for our students and community, and events like our career fair, align with that mission,” she said. “Overall, this event has been a great success. Every employer is hiring, instructors brought in their students, community members have joined us, and all this means that we are creating connections that ultimately will create jobs and careers.”

TSC’s Office of Career and Employment Services helps students transition from community college to a career and/or transfer to a four-year university by assisting in areas such as job searches, resume building, cover letter writing, mock interviews and dressing for success.
