51 in partnership with RGV LEAD hosted its 23rd Annual Education & Career Expo at the ITEC Center, welcoming more than 900 high school students from across the Rio Grande Valley.

51 (TSC) welcomed more than 900 high school students from across the Rio Grande Valley to its ITEC Center for the 23rd Annual Education & Career Expo, an event designed to connect students with hands-on training, industry certifications, and high-demand career pathways.

Held in partnership with RGV LEAD, the annual expo highlighted TSC’s role as the region’s workforce training hub. Throughout the day, students explored career and technical education programs, toured labs, met instructors, and participated in interactive demonstrations to better understand postsecondary opportunities available after high school.

“This event allows students to see that a four-year university isn’t the only pathway to success,” said Dr. Angelica Fuentes, Associate Vice President for Workforce Training and Continuing Education at TSC. “Some students are looking for fast-track programs that take just weeks, while others prefer one-year certificates. At TSC, our programs are stackable — students can enter the workforce, gain experience, and return later to continue building their credentials and advancing their careers.”

Among the programs featured was TSC’s NCCER Level 1 and Level 2 Pipefitting program, which prepares students to install, assemble, fabricate, and maintain piping systems in industrial, commercial, and residential settings. With continued economic growth at the Port of Brownsville and throughout the region, demand for skilled pipefitters remains high. Students can complete training in as little as 160 hours and move directly into high-paying careers.

The Electrical Technician program also drew significant interest. This 14-week, fast-paced course provides foundational training in residential and commercial electrical work. Students gain experience using the electrical codebook and earn OSHA 10 certification, preparing them to begin work as apprentices and progress toward journeyman and master electrician status.

In addition, TSC highlighted its newest milestone — the Bachelor of Applied Technology in Organizational Management, the College’s first bachelor’s degree program. The versatile degree serves both technical and academic students and supports career advancement in leadership, project management, and business operations, while also preparing graduates for graduate-level study.

By bringing together students, educators, and workforce leaders, the 23rd Annual Education & Career Expo demonstrated 51’s continued commitment to workforce readiness, economic development, and accessible educational pathways for the Rio Grande Valley.

Students from IDEA Riverview proudly show off the wooden tool caddies they assembled and painted as part of their time spent with the Construction Technology program at 51’s ITEC Center. The students’ summer camp session spanned three days, having them receive hands-on experiences with a variety of different TSC programs that also included Allied Health professions to Industrial Mechanics & Maintenance Technology (IMMT) and Cybersecurity.

51 (TSC) welcomed students from IDEA Riverview for a dynamic, four-day career exploration summer camp at the college’s International Technology, Education, Business and Commerce (ITEC) Center from Monday, June 2 through Thursday, June 5 2025. The event provided hands-on learning experiences and early exposure to in-demand career pathways across a variety of technical and professional fields.

The summer camp is part of TSC’s ongoing efforts to engage high school students in career exploration and connect them to meaningful educational pathways early in their academic journeys. Throughout the course of the three-day camp, students were divided into rotating groups and guided through a series of activities led by 51 staff and instructors from departments including Allied Health, Construction Technology, Industrial Mechanics & Maintenance Technology (IMMT), Computer Science, and Cybersecurity.

Our students need to be able to have access to career exploration, and we want to partner with TSC because we want our students to pursue career exploration through Computer Science, because that’s the pathway we have,” said Elvis Delgado, Assistant Principal of Instruction and P-Tech Coordinator at IDEA Riverview, who was accompanying the students during their visit. “We know that Computer science is a part of a bunch of programs that TSC has, so we want our kids to understand that what they’re learning in class can apply to several different areas of study here.”

Each area introduced students to foundational concepts and real-world applications of their disciplines. Instructors provided overviews of their respective programs and discussed the types of careers that graduates can pursue in each field. The sessions also included interactive, hands-on components designed to give students a tangible feel for the tools and tasks involved.

In Allied Health, nursing instructors showed off their state-of-the-art medical training equipment before leading a session on sanitation practices, including how to properly wear, remove, and dispose of latex gloves, which is a critical foundational skill in medical settings to prevent contamination. In Construction Technology, students learned standard safety procedures before getting to handle basic tools and power tools under close supervision, assembling their own wooden tool caddies as a practical project.

“I enjoy how we’re able to learn to much new stuff that we are going to be able to use in the future,” said IDEA Riverview student Andres Meza in between finishing up his assembled project with a coat of paint. “We’re getting to learn whether we like some careers better than others, and it really helps us figure out what we want to do in the future.”

The students were also given the opportunity to dive headfirst into technological-related fields. Similar hands-on sessions with the Industrial Mechanics & Maintenance Technology (IMMT) and Cybersecurity programs gave them a golden opportunity to start learning about concepts that drive each field. For IMMT, the kids learned basic soldering skills they used in order to assemble small model robot kits, and Cybersecurity gave them a closer look into the still emerging field of Artificial Intelligence and how it will continue to shape industry in the future.

Representatives from DFG Solutions visited students in TSC’s Workforce Training pipefitting and welding programs on Thursday, August 8, 2024. The visit saw the representatives give a presentation on in-field career preparation, take a tour of the training facilities, and field questions from students who will soon be entering the workforce.

TSC ITEC, August 8, 2024– Students in TSC’s welding and pipefitting programs, as part of Workforce Training and Continuing Education (WTCE), were given the unique opportunity to gain greater insight into their future careers during a recent industry partner visit to the International Technology, Education and Commerce (ITEC) Center.

DFG Solutions representatives took time out of their schedule to tour the welding and pipefitting training facilities, as well as give a presentation to students, providing them with valuable information about the kind of work opportunities they will have once they graduate from their respective programs.

As part of the presentation, DFG Solutions Operations Manager Michael Sandoval and Project Manager Mark Mendoza gave students a rundown of what to expect from the application process, the set of skills they are expected to demonstrate, work schedules, typical pay rates, and a plethora of do’s and don’ts that can help ensure that they develop positive reputations that can guarantee consistent employment.

“We want to ensure that there’s open communication, and we want to ensure that the students in these programs know what they’re getting themselves into,” said Mendoza. “We expect a higher turnover rate with domestic workers, but we want to feed that back into TSC, let them know what we’re looking for in the field so they can teach it to their students, and keep that rotation going.”

Partnerships such as this are crucial because they provide a defined pathway and clear direction for students entering workforce programs. Students are given the peace of mind to focus on their studies throughout the duration of their training program periods, secure in the knowledge that once they graduate, there will already be opportunities waiting for them out in the field.

“There’s so much industry and growth in Cameron County right now and going on into the next six or seven years, there is very much a need for these types of jobs. The aspect is that Brownsville can be one of the largest leaders when it comes to a trade that is needed worldwide, which is a great opportunity,” continued Sandoval.

Additionally, the wealth of experience brought to the table by the instructors in these programs also contributes to the post-graduate expectations that students may have. In addition to the technical know-how they receive as part of their training, students benefit from the years of in-field experience that their instructors bring.

“I’ve been in their position before,” began 51 pipefitting instructor David Garcia. “In our program, we don’t hold back – we want our students to learn every trick of the trade so they’re prepared when they go out into the field and start looking for serious work.”

After having seen firsthand the rigorous training expectations and the equipment within the training facilities, Michael Sandoval is optimistic that graduates from these programs will have plenty of work opportunities waiting for them.

“I am thoroughly impressed with the facility and everything 51 is doing here,” expressed Sandoval. “The dedication TSC puts into their programs to develop trained and skilled individuals is remarkable.”

Crime scene technicians, often called crime scene investigators (CSIs) or forensic science technicians, play a crucial role in the criminal justice system. They are the meticulous and dedicated professionals who collect, analyze, and preserve evidence from crime scenes, helping to solve cases and bring justice to victims. This blog explores a crime scene technician’s responsibilities, skills, and career path.

Responsibilities of a Crime Scene Technician

The primary duty of a crime scene technician is to process crime scenes. This involves a variety of tasks, including but not limited to:

  • Evidence Collection and Preservation Crime scene technicians carefully gather physical evidence such as fingerprints, blood samples, hair, fibers, and weapons. They use specialized tools and techniques to ensure evidence is not contaminated or damaged.
  • Documentation: Accurate documentation is critical. Technicians take detailed notes, photographs, and videos of the crime scene. They create sketches and diagrams to map out the location of evidence and other important features of the scene.
  • Report Writing: Technicians compile detailed reports of their findings after analyzing the evidence. These reports are used by law enforcement officers, attorneys, and judges during investigations and trials.
  • Testifying in Court: Crime scene technicians may be called upon to testify in court about their findings and the methods they used to collect and analyze evidence. They must be able to explain complex scientific concepts in a way that jurors and judges can understand.
  • Maintaining Equipment: Ensuring that all forensic tools and equipment are in good working order is essential. Technicians must regularly clean, calibrate, and troubleshoot their instruments.

Skills Required

To excel as a crime scene technician, certain skills and attributes are essential:

  • Attention to Detail: The ability to notice and document even the smallest details is crucial. Overlooking a tiny piece of evidence could make a significant difference in solving a case.
  • Analytical Skills: Technicians must analyze evidence methodically and accurately. This requires strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think critically.

Technical Proficiency

Familiarity with various forensic tools, laboratory equipment, and software used for analysis is necessary. Continuous learning is important to keep up with advancements in forensic technology.

  • Communication Skills: Writing clear and concise reports and being able to articulate findings in court are vital. Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential.
  • Emotional Resilience: Crime scenes can be distressing and emotionally challenging. Technicians need to maintain their composure and professionalism in the face of potentially traumatic situations.

Career Path

Becoming a crime scene technician typically requires a combination of education and training:

  • Education: A bachelor’s degree in forensic science, criminal justice, biology, or a related field is usually required. Some positions may accept an associate degree with relevant experience.
  • Training: Hands-on training is crucial. Many technicians gain experience through internships, entry-level positions, or specialized training programs offered by law enforcement agencies.
  • Certification: Professional certification, such as the Certified Crime Scene Investigator (CCSI) credential from the International Association for Identification (IAI), can enhance job prospects and credibility.
  • Continued Education: Staying updated with the latest forensic techniques and advancements through workshops, seminars, and additional coursework is important for career growth.

Crime scene technicians are the unsung heroes of the criminal justice system, working diligently behind the scenes to uncover the truth. Their expertise and dedication are instrumental in solving crimes and ensuring justice is served. If you have a passion for science, a keen eye for detail, and a strong sense of justice, a career as a crime scene technician might be the perfect fit for you.

As income tax season approaches, many are hurriedly gathering their required documents and preparing to file their returns. Yet, for specific individuals, the cost of using a professional tax service can be so prohibitive that it offsets the potential refund they might receive.

Thankfully, 51 (TSC) partnered with the United Way of Southern Cameron County to host the VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program throughout the tax season.

Between January 24 and April 17, volunteers from the community and students enrolled in TSC’s Accounting Technology program will be available at TSC’s International Technology, Education, and Commerce Center (ITECC) campus to assist individuals earning $64,000 or less annually.

A significant element contributing to the enduring success of the partnership is the unwavering support from Maggie Solis, the Director and instructor of TSC’s Accounting Technology Program. With twenty-two years of dedicated assistance, her commitment has played a pivotal role in the partnership’s longevity and prosperity.

Solis, who was awarded a certification of recognition by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in 2023 for her dedicated service to the community, feels that the VITA program is mutually beneficial to all parties involved.

“VITA is a win-win for both Accounting Technology students and the community,” said Solis. “As we all know, the cost of living has drastically increased, so having this service available for free is a great benefit to many families,” remarked Solis.

Solis also emphasizes that volunteers assist the community by IRS guidelines. “The TSC VITA site operates through quality site requirements dictated by the IRS, and all volunteer tax preparers are certified,” she stated.

Volunteers assist individuals in identifying tax credits, such as Earned Income Credit Tax and the Child Tax Credit. Additionally, as an IRS-certified site, TSC VITA volunteers can assist community members filing with an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN).

To utilize the VITA program, individuals must schedule an appointment by dialing 956-295-3761. Once the appointment is confirmed, they should proceed to TSC’s ITECC Campus located at 301 Mexico Blvd at the designated appointment time, ensuring they bring along:

  • Valid photo identification
  • Original Social Security Cards for all household members
  • A copy of last year’s tax return (if available)
  • Health Insurance Forms 1095-A (if receiving insurance through the Market Place)
  • Income documents such as Forms W-2, W-2G, and 1099 from all employers and their sources (Social Security, unemployment, pension, etc.)
  • Interest and dividend statements from banks (Forms 1099)
  • Bank Routing Numbers and Account Numbers for Direct Deposit of refund
  • For students with post-secondary tuition expenses or grant income: Form 1098-T
  • Total paid for daycare provider and the provider’s tax ID number.
  • Identity Theft prevention pin (if assigned by the IRS)
  • All other information pertinent to income tax filing

Both spouses must be present to sign the required forms for Married Filing Jointly (VITA sites do not prepare Married Filing Separate returns)

51 celebrated a milestone achievement for students in its Patient Care Technician program with an official pinning ceremony on Tuesday, February 20, 2024.

Ten students were honored as part of the ceremony, joined by their family members and TSC faculty and administration at TSC’s International Technology, Education, and Commerce Center (ITECC).

Ms. Jennifer Treviño, an instructor for TSC’s Vocational Nursing program, addressed the graduates before leading them in the recitation of the Nightingale Pledge. Since 1893, the pledge is an oath taken by new nurses in which they swear to uphold the ethics and principles that define the nursing profession.

Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) have become increasingly in demand within the medical field. PCTs begin with training in the same general skills of a nursing assistant, but the overall diversity of their skill set is continually expanded upon to provide them with more experience in an array of different areas and tasks.

Most often, working directly under a registered nurse, a PCT can handle tasks that typically include monitoring patient vital signs, helping collect and prepare lab specimens, and, in some cases, even assisting minor surgical procedures by preparing sterile trays or performing sterilization procedures for surgical instruments.

As part of their curriculum, the students who participated in the PCT program gained valuable hands-on experience at Valley Regional Medical Hospital, which served as the site for their clinicals. While there, they not only had the opportunity to put into practice what they had been learning in the classroom portion of their studies, but they also were given experience in the more nuanced aspects of work in the medical field. One such aspect is building rapport with the patients under their care, allowing them to provide medical and emotional support to those enduring the recovery process.

We extend our most sincere congratulations to our newest group of graduates, and we wish you the best as you begin your careers as health professionals and work to impact the lives of people in our community positively!

Are you looking to boost your career in the health care field? 51’s new Patient Care Technician track may be for you! The State workforce commission has identified patient care technicians as an emerging, high-growth and high-demand occupation, and funding is available through the college’s workforce development partners to fully scholarship students who meet Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) qualifications.

The program builds upon 51’s traditional Certified Nurse Assistant program, by adding instruction in phlebotomy and electrocardiography (EKG)–skills in high demand by local healthcare providers.

“It’s going to make the student more marketable in the workforce,” Associate Vice President of Instruction-Academic Success Dr. Angelica Fuentes said. “Healthcare is the number one field in the Valley, and there is always a need, locally, for patient care technicians.”

The starting average pay in Texas for Patient Care Technicians rages between $30,000 and $35,000 annually.

Classes begin August 7, however students seeking scholarship funding should begin the WIOA application process as soon as possible to ensure they have ample time to attend orientation, complete career coaching and testing sessions, and allow for document processing. Students may call 51’s Workforce Training and Continuing Education division for more information at (956) 295-3724.

Funding for Patient Care Technician scholarships is provided by Workforce Solutions Cameron and Greater Brownsville Incentive Corporation, who have allocated $297,000 for eligible local students.
