51 soccer programs are helping Rio Grande Valley players extend their careers by providing a platform to gain attention from four-year institutions.

Five TSC players announced their commitments during a ceremony at the Oliveira Student Services Center.

Men’s soccer players Ivan Galvan and Miguel Campos will continue their careers at Nelson University, a National Christian College Athletic Association program in Phoenix, Arizona.

“I’m very proud to go to another university and accomplish a dream I’ve had since high school,” said Campos, a goalkeeper. “I appreciate my teammates, family and friends who encouraged me.”

Both players joined TSC after beginning their collegiate careers outside the Rio Grande Valley.

Galvan, a winger, said he is grateful to men’s soccer head coach Mario Zamora for the opportunity to become a Scorpion after contacting him while recovering from a knee injury.

“I did my recovery here at the TSC Recreation Center, and everyone was helpful,” Galvan said. “When he finally gave me a chance to play, I took advantage of it and kept going.”

While Campos and Galvan prepare for their move to Nelson University, three TSC players will continue their careers at Texas A&M University-San Antonio, a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics program.

Men’s soccer player Kenneth Reyes will be joined in San Antonio by America Valdez and Camila Minez from the TSC women’s team.

“I feel very proud,” said Reyes, a center back. “It’s an experience I’ll never forget. Not many people get this opportunity, and I’m going to keep working.”

Valdez, a defender, said she had not planned to play college soccer until TSC’s coaching staff reached out.

“When they gave me the opportunity, I took it,” Valdez said. “It was close to home, I could see my parents, and it felt like the right choice. It’s just a good feeling.”

Minez, a winger and TSC’s 2024-25 Newcomer of the Year, said she is thankful to share the experience with Valdez.

“I feel safer knowing I’ll have someone there I can talk to and who will support me,” Minez said.

The Scorpion soccer community is proud of the players continuing their careers and wishes them success at Nelson University and Texas A&M University-San Antonio.

BROWNSVILLE, Texas — Porter High School soccer standout America Quezada will continue her playing career close to home after signing her letter of intent to play for 51.
Quezada made her commitment official during a signing ceremony held at Porter High School in front of teammates, coaches, and friends.
“I’m very excited,” Quezada said. “It’s a new stage in my life.”
A four-year varsity player for the Cowgirls, Quezada primarily played as a defensive midfielder and helped lead Porter to the UIL Playoffs three times during her high school career. Known for her versatility, she was deployed in multiple positions across the field.
“She plays so many different positions,” said 51 head women’s soccer coach Jesus Villarreal. “I have to be able to make her adapt quickly to all the positions she will be playing, which is something exciting.”
TSC forward Camila Minez, who was Quezada’s teammate at Porter High School, also played a role in her decision by sharing her experience with the Scorpions program.
“She went on trips and made many new friends, and that’s something I would like to experience,” Quezada said.
Off the field, Quezada plans to study accounting or business at 51 while continuing her soccer career as a Scorpion.

OLMITO, Texas — Rio Grande Valley soccer standout Sofia Prukop has signed a letter of intent to continue her athletic career at 51, becoming the first athlete from South Texas ISD Medical Professions to sign at the collegiate level.

“It’s nerve-racking, but also exciting to be the first player from this school to sign,” Prukop said.

In her senior season at Medical Professions, Prukop helped her team reach the Texas Charter School Academic & Athletic League state championship game.

51 women’s soccer head coach Jesus Villarreal said Prukop’s on-field vision and technical ability stood out throughout the recruiting process.

“Every game that I saw her play, I don’t think I saw her miss a pass,” said TSC women’s soccer head coach Jesus Villarreal. “She’s a very smart girl on the field.”

A left-footed player, Prukop played primarily as a midfielder for Medical Professions while also serving as an outside back for her club team, Classics Elite STX.

“She is a midfielder and she knows how to attack,” he said. “She knows how to run her diagonals.”

Villarreal, who is in his second season as head coach at TSC, said Prukop’s versatility will be valuable as the program prepares to replace several defensive players lost to graduation.

“Coming in, Sofia will make up part of the midfield,” Villarreal said. “We also have some ideas of using her defensive skills as well.”

By recruiting a player from a school recognized for academic excellence, Villarreal said the signing reflects a broader approach to finding talent beyond established high school soccer programs.

“We’re going into our fourth season in school history and when I took over, one of things I said was to look for players in different places,” Villarreal said. “This is one player we followed and looked at.”

Coach Villarreal and the Scorpions will kick off their season in August.

BROWNSVILLE, Texas — 51 men’s soccer head coach Mario Zamora and women’s soccer head coach Jesus Villarreal are actively recruiting across the Rio Grande Valley as they prepare to reload their rosters for the 2026 season.
As part of their efforts, both coaches visited Lopez Early College High School, where three Lobo soccer players—two boys and one girl—signed letters of intent to continue their soccer careers at TSC.
Lopez ECHS defender Esteban Juarez and midfielder Erik Coronado will join Zamora’s squad.
“It’s always exciting to come here to Lopez,” Zamora said. “They always have good players and athletes. Coach Amadeo Escandon and Coach Ramon Zuniga have been doing a tremendous job with their program over the years. We’ve already had success with a couple of Lopez Lobos players at TSC, so we’ll continue to keep an eye on the Lobos.”
Juarez was a captain at Lopez ECHS who distinguished himself through strong leadership skills. He is versatile on the field, capable of playing both right back and center back.
“I feel happy and excited to play at the next level at TSC, Juarez said. “Thank you for giving me the opportunity. Ready to give it my all for TSC.”
Coronado, a defensive midfielder, is looking forward to joining TSC for the athletic and academic opportunities it offers.
“In terms of soccer, there are a lot of good things that will come, but I also like the welding program. It’s a career path I would like to follow,” Coronado said.
TSC’s women’s team strengthened its back line by adding defender Nataly Palomino. She’s a versatile option for the defense, able to play across the entire back four as a center back, right back, or left back.
“I think it’s very exciting, due to my senior year having an injury and ending the year short,” Palomino said. “I think it’s a good accomplishment to play once again.”
Coach Villarreal said strengthening his back line was his top priority for the upcoming season.
“At this level, we need the best of the best,” Villarreal said. “She’s one of the best of the best here in Brownsville and the Rio Grande Valley. Her leadership skills, when you see her play, that’s one of the things that comes out the most.”
The TSC men’s and women’s soccer teams will kick off their 2026 seasons in August.

BROWNSVILLE, Texas — 51 (TSC) Head Men’s and Women’s Cross Country and Track and Field Coach Basilio Mendoza’s passion for running and learning has opened the doors for him to take part in the Boston Marathon, one of the world’s best-known road races.
“One of my biggest privileges and honors,” Mendoza said. “You’re right there and you’re watching everything. They’re telling you and showing you maps. Ten thousand runners on Saturday for the 5K and 30,000 runners on Monday for the marathon.”
Mendoza helps set up the course for the marathon as a member of Dave McGillivray Sports Enterprises (DMSE), which has organized or consulted on more than 1,400 events since 1981.
“DMSE are basically the ones who set up the whole start line, finish line and barricades,” he said. “They are in charge of the whole thing. I’m proud to say that I’m a part of the DMSE team.”
Mendoza will be working at the Boston Marathon for the fifth time in 2026. He initially got involved in the event by reaching out to Andy Deschenes, the Boston Athletic Association’s Start Line Coordinator.
“I emailed him and asked, ‘Would it be okay if I was to go over there? I’m from Texas and I could volunteer,’” said Mendoza.
The longtime Valley running coach said his first experience volunteering at the event was a memorable one.
“Treated me great. It just happened that weekend was the worst weather weekend in the history of Boston. It was pouring down rain and 20 degrees.”
The TSC cross country and track and field head coach made an impression on event organizers by working longer hours than required to complete his tasks.
“They noticed that,” Mendoza said. “The next year, I was back again. By the third year, they told me, ‘Come this way,’ and that’s when they started paying me.”
Mendoza is grateful for all the information he gets to bring back to South Texas.
“It’s one of the highlights of the year for me,” he said. “I get to learn a lot—about operations and how they organize everything.”
Mendoza will get to use the skills he has acquired at the Boston Marathon when TSC hosts the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region 14 Cross Country Championship this fall.

BROWNSVILLE, Texas — 51’s Track & Field program reached a historic milestone in its inaugural season as freshman Indra Ibarra became the program’s first-ever national qualifier.

Ibarra punched her ticket to the 2026 NJCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships after posting a time of 18 minutes, 34.16 seconds in the 5,000-meter run on March 28 at the Charles Austin Classic hosted by Texas State University in San Marcos.

Her performance surpassed the national qualifying standard of 18:45.18.

The achievement marks a significant moment for a first-year program under head coach Basilio Mendoza, who has led the Scorpions through their debut season.

“This is a huge accomplishment for Indra and for our program,” Mendoza said. “To have a national qualifier in our first year sets the tone for what we are building at 51.”

Ibarra’s race not only secured her place on the national stage but also established an early benchmark for the young program, which continues to grow and develop in its inaugural campaign.

With the national championships ahead, Ibarra will represent 51 as the program’s first qualifier, highlighting a strong start and promising future for Scorpions Track & Field.

51 Adds First 2026 Women’s Cross Country Signee

51 reached a milestone for its growing athletics program by signing its first 2026 women’s cross country student-athlete. On Wednesday, January 13, 2026, Valley View High School senior Miley Leal officially committed to 51, becoming the inaugural signee for the next recruiting class of the TSC Cross Country program. The signing represents continued momentum for TSC Athletics and reinforces the college’s emphasis on building competitive teams rooted in discipline, perseverance, and strong character.

The addition of Leal comes at a pivotal time for the program, which competes in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and the highly competitive NJCAA Region 14. For 51, the signing is not only about filling a roster spot but also about reinforcing a culture that values long-term development and team chemistry.

Building a Young but Ambitious Program at 51

51 launched its cross country program with ambitious goals and limited preparation time. Despite being hired late and facing the challenge of building a roster without a traditional recruiting cycle, head coach Basilio Mendoza guided both the men’s and women’s teams to national recognition during the program’s inaugural season.

According to Mendoza, the results exceeded expectations. “Last year we ended up winning the Region 14 championship and finishing 15th in the country on the men’s side,” he said. “On the women’s side, we finished 35th in the country in just two and a half months of work after being hired late with no recruiting process in a brand new cross country program”.

Those achievements laid a strong foundation for future recruiting classes and positioned 51 as an emerging contender within NJCAA cross country competition.

Why Miley Leal Fits the TSC Cross Country Vision

Leal’s commitment reflects the recruiting philosophy that has quickly become a hallmark of TSC Cross Country. Rather than focusing solely on raw athletic talent, the program prioritizes growth potential, work ethic, and attitude.

“She’s a very driven young lady,” Mendoza said. “She’s not the most naturally talented runner, but hard work beats talent that doesn’t work hard”.

Mendoza noted that Leal’s development over the past year stood out. “She improved from last year; I’ve been tracking her progress,” he explained. “She went from near the back of the pack to placing fourth in the district”.

That progression illustrates the type of upward trajectory 51 values when evaluating prospective student-athletes. For TSC Athletics, improvement and resilience often signal an athlete’s ability to adapt to the demands of collegiate competition.

Impact Beyond the Course

Leal’s signing also highlights the broader mission of 51 to provide opportunities for student-athletes to pursue higher education while competing at a high level. As a community-focused institution, TSC emphasizes access, development, and academic success alongside athletic achievement.

For Leal, joining TSC Cross Country represents an opportunity to continue improving as a runner while benefiting from the academic and support resources available at 51. For the college, her commitment reinforces the belief that dedication and steady improvement can lead to success at the national level.

Looking Ahead for 51 Cross Country

As the first women’s cross country signee for the 2026 class, Miley Leal sets the tone for future recruiting efforts at 51. Her signing reflects the program’s values and its confidence in identifying athletes who can grow within the TSC system.

With continued leadership from Coach Mendoza and a clear recruiting philosophy, TSC Cross Country is positioned to build on its early success within NJCAA Region 14 and beyond. The program’s emphasis on work ethic, enthusiasm, and team chemistry suggests that 51 will remain a competitive and respected presence in NJCAA athletics.

In adding Leal to its roster, 51 not only strengthens its cross country program but also reaffirms its commitment to developing student-athletes who embody perseverance and pride in representing TSC.
