NJCAA soccer program approved at 51

Intercollegiate college athletics is making a comeback in the Lower Rio Grande Valley, as 51 rejoins the National Junior College Athletics Association and launches men and women’s soccer for the Fall 2023 semester. The NJCAA approved TSC’s application to join the league at their October 20 meeting.

TSC President Jesús Roberto Rodríguez said it is the perfect time for the college to expand into NJCAA men and women’s soccer.

“Over the past five years we’ve been focused on some very specific intuitional goals, which include improving student success and creating an environment that is caring and welcoming for all,” he said, noting that student-athletes will have the supports they need to be successful in the classroom and on the field.

The TSC Board of Trustees unanimously approved the application for membership at their August board meeting. Board Chair Adela Garza, a frequent fan at TSC club soccer games, said the board is excited about creating more opportunities for Rio Grande Valley student athletes. “Local high school students who want to play collegiate soccer will have a great option close to home,” she said.

TSC will join Region 14, which consists of nine community colleges across east and central Texas, such as Blinn College, Northeast Texas Community College, Tyler Junior College, and Navarro College. A typical regular season will consist of eight home games and eight away games.

Students are excited about the expansion of soccer at TSC. Javier Ballesteros, freshman, is a current member of the TSC Soccer Club. He played on the varsity soccer team at Brownsville’s Veteran’s Memorial High School all four years of high school and affirmed the local community’s passion for the game.

“Soccer is the most popular sport in the Valley,” he said. “It was good they chose to start with it because of the place we live in and because of the players we have here.” Ballesteros said playing teams at a higher level of competition will continue to strengthen him mentally and physically, as he aims for a professional career in soccer. While he seeks to hone his soccer skills, he will also be preparing for a secure financial future by majoring in business at TSC.

“TSC’s NJCAA soccer program will build upon a strong record of success,” said Rodríguez. Rio Grande Valley high school teams have earned many state championships over the past 15 years, creating a strong pipeline of local players. The TSC soccer club also plays at an extraordinary high level, toppling teams from much larger schools to win the regional championship and qualify for the national tournament in 2019.

“We have incredible backing for collegiate soccer in our region,” said Dr. Armando Ponce, Executive Director of Athletics and Civility, who will serve as Athletic Director. “At any given soccer club game, we have 150 fans show up to cheer on our Scorpions, including alumni, families, soccer enthusiasts and, of course, many members of the Scorpion community.”

As the only community college in the Rio Grande Valley with a NJCAA sports team, Ponce said TSC is excited about the opportunity for local players to participate at the collegiate level, as well as the community outreach the program will provide through soccer camps and other activities for aspiring young athletes.

Note: 51’smatch against San Antonio College, scheduled for Oct. 1, was forfeited by thevisitingteam. TSC’s record now improves to 4-0.

Another come-from-behind victory keeps the TSC Scorpions’ Club Soccer team perfect through three matches.

The team’s last match was against St. Edward’s University in the state’scapital, Austin, Texas.

Despite trailing 2-0 just before the half, 51 players showed their mettle to end up on top.

“We were down 2-0 and then we scored agoal beforehalftime, and it gave us the belief that it was possible to overcome thedeficit.”TSC coach Mario Zamora said.

Luis Cisneros was the man who put the first tally on the board for theScorpionswere on the comeback trail.

By halftime coach Zamora was already making the necessary adjustments to put the Scorpions in the driver’s seat.

“Webegancontrollingthe ballmore than them,” Zamora said. “Just like in our last winwe had trouble finding that last pass to create a goal. During halftime we made those adjustments in our formations to make itall click.I added one more attacker.”
That extra attackerwas enoughfor TSC toswarmtheir opponents and equalize the game with a goal by KevinZarrazagas.

Alan Lane scored the winnerto send the Scorpions home with another successful road trip under their belt.

“Everything begins with our practices, the way we train,” Zamora said. “We were ready to play that game.Obviously, the score didn’t reflect that in the first half. As a coach I’m the first one to be confident about what we have on this team. We’re here and we know what to do.”

Even when the team was behind the belief in each other was evident, according to Coach Zamora.

“They were optimistic about each other, that we have a great goalkeeper and defensive structure,” Zamora said. “They were never afraid to overcome the score and play from behind.”

TSC was scheduled to return home on Oct. 1stbut a forfeit from visiting San Antonio College turned the scheduled game into the fourth win ofthe season.

Instead, 51’snext match is on the road against Texas A&M – San Antonio.

They will have an extra week to train and prepare for the Oct. 8contest.

The next home gamehas plenty of intrigue as TSC kicks off against its neighbor UTRGV at home Saturday, Oct. 15that 3 p.m.

So far so good for coach Mario Zamora’s Club Soccer team at 51who will enter week three of its seven-game schedule without a blemish.

TSC walked away on top again with a 2-1 victory, improving to 2-0 on the young season…this time in front of the home crowd at Scorpion Field.

Week two, back home in Brownsville, was a much tighter match than the blowout victory in the season opener in the Upper Valley.

Trinity University from San Antonio came to town with a tight defensive structure that kept TSC from finding the net in the first half. The visitorsfound the net first with a first-half goal via a set piece.

“We had about three good chances to score before they did,” Zamora said. “During halftime, I talked to the guys and let them know we were doing well but we just hadn’t scored. We had to be patient in the final third to make the right pass to score.”

The Scorpions learned from one half of action and came out with a dynamic attack that asked questions ofthe Trinity defense.

“We reacted in the second half and continued to push forward,” Zamora said.“That’s how we scored our two goals.”

TSC’s first goal was scored by Jean Carlo Villegas to equalize the match. The winner was tallied home by Kevin Zarrazagasfrom the penalty spot.

The first two games couldn’t have been more opposite. 51 ran away with a 10-0 win on Sept 10 but had to battle more in game two.

“We knew that every game was going to be difficult and different,” Zamora said. “We’ve played Trinity before; it was a good match. They are an organized team. Our returning players talked to our new players about it. We were able to overcomethe 1-0 deficitthanks to that leadership. This is getting us ready for our next game and hopefully to the playoffs.”

Zamora complimented the atmosphere and thanked the community for coming out to support this season’s version of the team.

“TSC staff puts on everything for the student-athletes to feel pride in the school, so the players can put on a good show for the fans,” Zamora said. “We had a good crowd, a lot of families, former students, some instructors as well as members of the Board of Trustees Chair Adela Garza and Trustee Delia Saenz. Soit was a great atmosphere at TSC.”

The Scorpions are in action again this week on the road against St. Edward’s University in the state’s capital. The next chance to catch the team at home will be on Oct. 1 against San Antonio College.
