51 (TSC) students from the Accounting Technology Program are getting a chance to help community members by volunteering their time to file income tax returns. The students are taking part in TSC’s annual VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program held at the school’s ITEC Center.
“All of our volunteers are certified through the IRS VITA certification program,” said Maggie Solis, TSC Accounting Technology Program Coordinator. “From tax preparers to people doing quality review. This impacts because it’s a win-win situation for my students in the accounting technology program. They’re getting real world experience and dealing with customer service doing the tax preparation. They get to learn more than the usual.”
TSC’s VITA program assists people who make less than $67,000 annually by helping them file their taxes free of charge.
“Mainly to help the elderly, non-English speakers, and the ones who are not well with using technology,” Solis said. “Again, our tax returns are e-filed. We also help community with (other) tax returns, maybe someone forgot to do their 2024, 2023. We also do those tax returns.”
Students can also assist with other services to help community members file their tax returns.
“If someone is needing an ITIN number, which is an identification number just for the purpose of doing tax returns, we also do those here for free.” Solis added.
Solis’ students volunteering their time in the VITA program took coursework on federal income tax law in the fall semester.
“So now, with service learning, it’s their opportunity to put that into practice and get to learn more about what it takes to do a tax return. Not only a basic tax return, but what is considered an advanced (return), which includes other forms of income that we can also process. All my students in the program end up getting certified in what is considered the advanced, which is the highest certification that they can get.”
Solis says she and her students enjoy seeing the reaction of their clients when they finish filing their tax returns.
“Our clients are very excited when we get to tell them so much of a refund is coming to them and it’s all free,” Solis said. “We do not charge for any of this. When someone goes to an outside preparer, it can cost you between $300 and $500, even more.”
The TSC VITA program will offer its services Monday-Saturday until April 15 at the ITEC Center located on 301 Mexico Blvd.

Telemundo reporter Martha Alicia Lopez reported live from TSC’s ITEC Center for Telemundo Tax Day on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, providing home viewers with information about the VITA Tax program and ensuring that more people have an opportunity to benefit from the services offered.

With Tax Day just over a month away, many have yet to file a federal income tax return. 51 and United Way’s VITA Tax Services program, located in the ITECC building, have been working hard to assist those who need help with the income tax filing process. This past Wednesday, February 26, 2025, they had a little help from Telemundo.

This year’s Telemundo Tax Day is the second iteration of the event, in which representatives from the media network are on-site at the ITECC, holding live broadcasts to promote the VITA Tax services to a wider audience.

“Telemundo has been a great help through their willingness to promote the VITA Tax services to our local Spanish-speaking community,” said Magdalena Solis, Program Director and an instructor for TSC’s Accounting Technology program. “We can get the word out about providing these free tax services and have that information reach more people who can benefit from it.”

Solis has been helping out with the VITA service for the past 23 years, and she hopes that the event will help spread the word to a wider audience about the assistance they provide to those who have yet to file their taxes. With the filing process through VITA being offered free of charge for those whose annual income is under $67,000, raising awareness has always been a priority, and Telemundo has been more than willing to use its reach to help signal boost the event.

“We want to help spread the word to people in the southern Cameron County area to have access to these tax services and information so that they don’t have to go through the struggle of finding a tax preparation place and then having to pay a fee,” said Angelica Falcone, Telemundo 40 Marketing Specialist. “If more people are aware of the free services being offered here, they will be able to get the most out of their return, which is what we want to see,” said Angelica Falcone, Marketing Specialist for Telemundo 40.

Myriad issues cause many to delay filing their taxes, whether it be unfamiliarity with the process as a whole, financial strain, or uncertainty about personal instances, which may or may not affect their filing status. The VITA Tax services program utilizes a pool of trained volunteers, both members the general public and students in TSC’s Accounting Technology program, to help guide individuals through the process, answering any questions along the way.
“In my Accounting Technology program, students have to complete a number of volunteer hours as part of the coursework, and many students have volunteered to help with VITA tax preparation not only to fulfill the volunteer hours but also to get practice using the skills they have learned in their program.”

With April 15, 2025, being the last day to file, there is still plenty of time to take advantage of the VITA program. Individuals interested in filing their income tax through VITA can schedule an appointment by calling 956-295-3761.

Nearly every student who embarks upon a journey into higher education does so, hoping to graduate and find a fulfilling career afterward. The search for a career can be a separate journey, but the distance between college and career is often closer than some may think.

That is the case for Olga Nelly Rosas, a 51 graduate who now applies the skills she learned in the classroom for the college as a Payroll Specialist at her alma mater.

Rosas’ story began here in our local area. “I was born here [Brownsville, Texas], but I lived in Tamaulipas and studied there until high school,” said Rosas. “At 16, my parents sent me to a boarding school in Texas, and after that, I studied to be a Computer Accounting Specialist, but I got married, and I only had sporadic work afterward.”

Though Rosas put her educational pursuits on pause to devote herself to her new family, life has a way of introducing unexpected turns, and one turn, in particular, put Rosas in a position to reevaluate both her educational and long-term career opportunities.

“After 22 years, I got divorced, and I wanted to work, but my son told me that if I wanted to find anything, I had to return to college,” said Rosas.

This decision led Rosas to 51, partly thanks to herDz. “He brought me to 51 because he was studying here at that time, and he helped me to enroll in my classes,” Rosas recalled.  “He came with me on my first day of class because he wanted to make sure I would be okay, just like I did with him for his first day of kindergarten.”

Upon enrolling at TSC, Rosas determined that the Accounting Technology program would be a good fit and open doors for future career opportunities. That decision brought her under the tutelage of Magdalena Solis, Program Director and 51s’ Accounting Technology Program instructor.

While she struggled at first, Solis’ encouragement ended up making a difference for Rosas in the long run.  “When she started the program, Ms. Rosas was quiet and reserved, like most other students, and kept to herself,” Solis recalled. “However, as time progressed, and she took other classes, she became more engaged with classmates and gained self-confidence in her work.”

Rosas was candid about her early difficulties with the course. “I remember talking to Mrs. Solis and confessing that I was struggling,” she said.

However, she also remembers the sincere support that she received from her instructor. “Ms. Solis looked at me and said, ‘You can do it, just keep practicing.’  She believed in me more than I believed in myself.”

The Accounting Technology program is designed so that students not only learn the skills they will need for work in accounting and related fields but also help them network and open doors for future opportunities through integrated internships as part of the program’s curriculum.

“The Accounting Technology program’s internship class allows students to engage with potential employers. In the internship class, students are placed with an employer as a volunteer to practice what they have learned in the classroom,” said Solis.

This crucial element for Rosas would inextricably build the bridge between her educational pathway and her future career. “In the case of Ms. Rosas, her internship was here at TSC,” said Solis. “She excelled as a student intern and eventually applied for a full-time position. She has made progress in her career.”

What makes this more remarkable is that, for Rosas, it was the fulfillment of a quiet goal she had set for herself during her earliest days as a student.

“During my first semester, I was on the second floor in Tandy Hall and passed by an empty office. At that time, the offices were empty, but I peeked inside and thought, ‘I’d like to work in a place like that someday,’” began Rosas. “I feel proud of myself; after over 20 years, I returned to college, graduated with honors, and ended up working in that exact same office; I never expected that.”

For Solis, it’s a success story that illustrates that a college education can open doors for future careers, but beyond that, it’s also a joy to see a former student go on to achieve great things for themselves.

“Ms. Rosas was an excellent student, and through her determination and self-confidence she has excelled. My congratulations to Ms. Rosas and the progress she has made in her career.”
