Students from IDEA Riverview proudly show off the wooden tool caddies they assembled and painted as part of their time spent with the Construction Technology program at 51’s ITEC Center. The students’ summer camp session spanned three days, having them receive hands-on experiences with a variety of different TSC programs that also included Allied Health professions to Industrial Mechanics & Maintenance Technology (IMMT) and Cybersecurity.

51 (TSC) welcomed students from IDEA Riverview for a dynamic, four-day career exploration summer camp at the college’s International Technology, Education, Business and Commerce (ITEC) Center from Monday, June 2 through Thursday, June 5 2025. The event provided hands-on learning experiences and early exposure to in-demand career pathways across a variety of technical and professional fields.

The summer camp is part of TSC’s ongoing efforts to engage high school students in career exploration and connect them to meaningful educational pathways early in their academic journeys. Throughout the course of the three-day camp, students were divided into rotating groups and guided through a series of activities led by 51 staff and instructors from departments including Allied Health, Construction Technology, Industrial Mechanics & Maintenance Technology (IMMT), Computer Science, and Cybersecurity.

Our students need to be able to have access to career exploration, and we want to partner with TSC because we want our students to pursue career exploration through Computer Science, because that’s the pathway we have,” said Elvis Delgado, Assistant Principal of Instruction and P-Tech Coordinator at IDEA Riverview, who was accompanying the students during their visit. “We know that Computer science is a part of a bunch of programs that TSC has, so we want our kids to understand that what they’re learning in class can apply to several different areas of study here.”

Each area introduced students to foundational concepts and real-world applications of their disciplines. Instructors provided overviews of their respective programs and discussed the types of careers that graduates can pursue in each field. The sessions also included interactive, hands-on components designed to give students a tangible feel for the tools and tasks involved.

In Allied Health, nursing instructors showed off their state-of-the-art medical training equipment before leading a session on sanitation practices, including how to properly wear, remove, and dispose of latex gloves, which is a critical foundational skill in medical settings to prevent contamination. In Construction Technology, students learned standard safety procedures before getting to handle basic tools and power tools under close supervision, assembling their own wooden tool caddies as a practical project.

“I enjoy how we’re able to learn to much new stuff that we are going to be able to use in the future,” said IDEA Riverview student Andres Meza in between finishing up his assembled project with a coat of paint. “We’re getting to learn whether we like some careers better than others, and it really helps us figure out what we want to do in the future.”

The students were also given the opportunity to dive headfirst into technological-related fields. Similar hands-on sessions with the Industrial Mechanics & Maintenance Technology (IMMT) and Cybersecurity programs gave them a golden opportunity to start learning about concepts that drive each field. For IMMT, the kids learned basic soldering skills they used in order to assemble small model robot kits, and Cybersecurity gave them a closer look into the still emerging field of Artificial Intelligence and how it will continue to shape industry in the future.

51 Graduates Latest Group of Police Academy Cadets

A graduation ceremony for ten police cadets was held on Saturday, June 8, at 51’s Performing Arts Center. The cadets are the most recent batch of hopefuls to complete TSC Workforce Training’s Basic Police Officer Certification Program, a part of the college’s Criminal Justice Institute.

After the traditional Presentation of Colors courtesy of the Brownsville Police Department Color Guard, the cadets were addressed by speakers, including TSC Board of Trustees Chairwoman Adela G. Garza, TSC President Dr. Jesus Roberto Rodriguez, and Administrative First Assistant District Attorney for Cameron County Edward Sandoval, who served as the keynote speaker for this year’s ceremony. Also present were TSC Board of Trustee Vice-Chair J.J. De Leon and TSC Board of Trustees Secretary Alejandra Aldrete, and AVP of Workforce Training and Continuing Education Dr. Angelica Fuentes.

“Thank you for taking this path and wanting to serve your community,” said Sandoval as he addressed the new graduates during his keynote speech. “As you embark on this path, never forget the values that have been instilled in you. I do not doubt that in a few years, you will have bars and stars on your collars, and our community will continue to be safe for all of us because we have you as our protectors.”

Police Academy Class President Manuel Barreda II led his fellow cadets in recitation of the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics shortly before each was individually awarded their certificate. Barrera’s decision to pursue a career in law enforcement wasn’t a difficult choice, as he has always had positive role models close by. “I come from a law enforcement family, and it’s always been part of my family tradition to serve in some capacity,” remarked Barrera. “After I got out of the military, joining this program was a natural first step.”

The six-month program puts cadets through a comprehensive curriculum mandated by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE). Cadets are trained in skill areas crucial to police officers’ duties, such as academics, fitness, practical application, and reality-based training scenarios. Also, they receive legal training from Cameron County District Attorneys, ensuring they have a solid understanding of their roles and functions as officers, as well as the laws they will enforce.

“We had a lot of scenario-based training such as practicing stops and civilian encounters, all of which were great preparation for what to expect in the field,” said Barrera of he and his classmates’ training experiences. “Even with the heat outside, we all still enjoyed getting out in the field and practicing practical application for everything we were learning.”

Those who complete the course are eligible to take the Texas Peace Officer Licensing exam, which, if passed, will allow them to work throughout Cameron County and the state of Texas.

To Crisobal Abrego, Training Coordinator/Instructor for the TSC Criminal Justice Institute, seeing a new group of graduates ready to begin their careers in law enforcement is always an occasion that instills a great amount of pride. “It’s been an honor and privilege to train and guide them,” said Abrego. “Their training has helped them develop a strong skill set and work ethic so that now they can go out there and serve the community as best as they can, and we’re incredibly proud to see them achieve this milestone.”

51 is certified by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement as a Police Training Academy, and they are always on the lookout for young individuals who are passionate about wanting to pursue a career in the field of law enforcement.

In the end, as the new cadets prepare to head out into their new line of work, TSC Vice President of External Relations & Workforce Development Richard Mesquias sends them off with a final message of congratulations. “Completing this rigorous program is a testament to your dedication, perseverance, and commitment to justice. We are proud of all you have accomplished and confident that you will make a positive impact in the criminal justice field. Best wishes for a successful and fulfilling career.”

Are you looking to boost your career in the health care field? 51’s new Patient Care Technician track may be for you! The State workforce commission has identified patient care technicians as an emerging, high-growth and high-demand occupation, and funding is available through the college’s workforce development partners to fully scholarship students who meet Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) qualifications.

The program builds upon 51’s traditional Certified Nurse Assistant program, by adding instruction in phlebotomy and electrocardiography (EKG)–skills in high demand by local healthcare providers.

“It’s going to make the student more marketable in the workforce,” Associate Vice President of Instruction-Academic Success Dr. Angelica Fuentes said. “Healthcare is the number one field in the Valley, and there is always a need, locally, for patient care technicians.”

The starting average pay in Texas for Patient Care Technicians rages between $30,000 and $35,000 annually.

Classes begin August 7, however students seeking scholarship funding should begin the WIOA application process as soon as possible to ensure they have ample time to attend orientation, complete career coaching and testing sessions, and allow for document processing. Students may call 51’s Workforce Training and Continuing Education division for more information at (956) 295-3724.

Funding for Patient Care Technician scholarships is provided by Workforce Solutions Cameron and Greater Brownsville Incentive Corporation, who have allocated $297,000 for eligible local students.

TSC Accounting instructor and Coordinator, Maggie Solis, honored by IRS /news/2023/02/tsc-accounting-instructor-and-coordinator-maggie-solis-honored-by-irs/ Wed, 08 Feb 2023 17:24:29 +0000 /news/?p=2021 The post TSC Accounting instructor and Coordinator, Maggie Solis, honored by IRS appeared first on 51 News.

Maggie Solis is a staple at 51 (TSC). She has been an accounting instructor at TSC for ten years, but her career spans 21 years, including the 51/University of Texas Brownsville partnership days. As a TSC Accounting Technology program instructor, Solis is also the Program Coordinator.

Countless students have acquired their start as accountants in her classes. Many residents in the greater community have also benefited from the free income tax assistance she provides through her volunteer work with United Way’s program, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA).

The U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) recently recognized Solis for her longstanding dedication to providing this service to the community she serves. She has volunteered at VITA for twenty years.

IRS representatives Robert Kerner, Grace Torres, and Maria Bustamante, the United Way of Southern Cameron County’s VITA Coordinator Mayela Moreno, and CEO Traci Wickett, presented a certificate of recognition to Solis during this year’s opening of the VITA program at the International Technology, Education and Commerce Center (ITECC) in late January.

“What she does to give back to the community and the people here is priceless,” said IRS representative Grace Torres. “She has volunteered for many years. She has helped for many years by running this site and getting her students to do the same.”

During tax season, Solis and her students spend countless Saturdays volunteering to assist community members making less than $58K in preparing their taxes, and their efforts do not go unnoticed. When Solis’ award photo was shared on TSC’s social media platforms, there was an outpouring of support and “thank yous” from students she has taught and mentored throughout her career as an instructor.

Solis is a firm believer in the VITA program. She strives to help the community she serves by guiding and educating them on the best practices to save money on taxes.

“Not only do we provide the free income tax service, but in the process, we are educating the community,” said Solis. “Part of the education we provide is to inform them about the credits available, especially the Earned Income Tax Credit. When someone has dependents, that credit will give them a higher tax refund at the end.”

Solis’s students get valuable service-learning experience by working on real-life scenarios preparing individual taxes while at the same time fulfilling a community need.

“You get to see the students grow because it adds value to the understanding of what they are doing since these are real tax returns,” Solis said.

IRS representatives agree with Solis and mention that in many cases, volunteer students with VITA credentials are recruited at a higher salary grade than entry-level because of the experience they have acquired volunteering in the program.

Maggie Solis and the accounting program can be reached at 956-295-3575 or via e-mail atmaggie.solis@tsc.edu.

ITECC will host opening night Wednesday at 6 p.m. Exhibition runs through Dec. 9th

51Art Program CoordinatorDavid Ransom’s students were hard at work last week putting the final touches on their renditions of famousartists’ works.

They are preparing for ‘The Master Copy’ exhibitionthat will be on display atthe TSC Fine Arts Gallery at ITECC.

The exhibit’sopeningnighteventis on Wednesday, Nov. 16that 6 p.m.where the art pieces will be combined with live music, refreshments and the students on hand to talk about their final productsand the road to completing them.

Ransom explained that the project is an academicstudy thathelps students understand the tools, techniques and practices that artists used when producing famous works thatstandthe test of time.

“You certainly want thestudentstobe looking atan artist using the same medium. Forexample, oil paint on canvas as opposed to a piece using acrylic paint,” Ranson said. “That way they can better get the likeness and practice because the students are using the same process.”

Art student HuuTrietBui was in the middleoftimetraveling to the 17thcentury to attempt a Dutch Baroque piece.“The piece I chose was ‘The Milkmaid’ by Johannes Vermeer. The reason I chose this piece—to be honest, it’smy first painting ever—my directioninart is moreintosculpting. So,I want to learn more about colors and other disciplines.”

Bui, like many of his peers in thePainting 1course,seemed to quickly pick up the difficult task of recreating classics. The students have been working on their pieces since October 13th.

“This means a lot to me if I can pull it off because he uses a very limited palette but still created some really vibrant colors.”

Bui is a perfect example of the students mixing a knack for being artistic or creative combined with the necessary background to better understand the techniques behind making a painting.

“Our students inherently have a lot of natural ability,” Ransom said. “They might not have been exposed to a lot of structure. It’s areally greatfit for the students. They start to realize how much more they can do.”

Like a true art historian,Ransom, quoted the painter of theSistine Chapel,Michaelangelo.

Michaelangelo once said ‘The challenge is not setting the bar too high and not reaching it, the challenge is setting the bar too low and hitting our mark.’That’s where the idea of the master copy comes into play. Aiming at something that seems unattainable at first but once you understand the process realizing it is attainable.”

Amanda Hernandez was another student nearly done with her piece which was a mesmerizing rendition ofRomanticist William Blake. The piece she is working on is called‘The Great Red Dragon and the Woman Clothed with the Sun.’

“This book is based on theBook ofRevelationsfromthe bible,”Amanda Hernandez said. “I’mnot religious per se but I really want to be able to create something dark but beautiful. That is what I want to do with my future art.”

You can seeall ofthese pieces and more at the TSCFine Arts Gallery at ITECC. The exhibition runs fromNovember 16 to December 9th.

For more information about the TSCArtProgramyoucan contact Chair of Arts, Business and History Jaime Saenz at 956-295-3657. Or you can reach Mr. Ransom directlyat956-295-3590.

51 Art student Natalia Salinas recently gave art goers a look into her soul during the college’s annual spring semester Capstone Art Exhibit at the TSC International Technology, Education and Commerce Center (ITECC) Fine Arts Gallery.

The 21-year-old, who was one of 12 Painting II students exhibiting art, showcased her collection of paintings titled, “A Good Look into my Soul.”

“My paintings are a reflection of who I am and highlight my struggles with mental health,” said Salinas. “If you look at my paintings, you’ll see they all include mirrors, that’s a self-analysis and I hope that my art is relatable to others and sprouts important discussions about mental health.”

Salinas has been painting since middle school and validated her career choice early on by deciding she would grow up to be an artist. Through her art, like the pieces displayed at TSC Fine Arts Gallery, she raises awareness on important or taboo topics.

TSC Art student Natalia Salinas

“I want my art to begin conversations and to streamline issues others are afraid to speak of,” she said. “I’m so thankful and happy to TSC and our Art Instructor, Robert Andes, for giving us this opportunity to express ourselves, while learning, training and gaining real-world experiences.”

Andes said this art exhibit has been a longtime tradition for the program to give students like Salinas the opportunity to showcase their work.

TSC Art-Exhibit

“I’m so proud of every one of my students, they have worked so hard to get here,” said Andes. “They have not only painted and prepared presentations for this art show, but they have also organized it, working tirelessly to ensure it’s a positive experience for everyone.”

Andes’ Painting II students created their art series at the beginning of the semester and have worked since January to improve and finalize every piece displayed.

In this class, students learn and apply their skills in paint layering, color schemes, color variation and visual depth, putting in more than 30 hours, including early mornings, evenings and weekends to finish their series.

“This gives my students a little taste into the world of art and what is expected of them as artists,” said Andes. “For many, this is their first art show and to give them this experience as students is invaluable. It’s one of my favorite moments of the year.”

As for Salinas, this is her fourth art show, second at TSC, and said she still learns something new every time and that these experiences help her improve and grow as an artist.

“I never thought I would be able to show as much work as I have at only 21,” said Salinas, who expects to graduate with an associate degree in Art later this year. “TSC has given me the tools I need to continue mastering my skills and opened my eyes to new opportunities.”

Andes added, “New opportunities, is exactly what we want for our students and these art shows give them just that.”
