51 Adds First 2026 Women’s Cross Country Signee

51 reached a milestone for its growing athletics program by signing its first 2026 women’s cross country student-athlete. On Wednesday, January 13, 2026, Valley View High School senior Miley Leal officially committed to 51, becoming the inaugural signee for the next recruiting class of the TSC Cross Country program. The signing represents continued momentum for TSC Athletics and reinforces the college’s emphasis on building competitive teams rooted in discipline, perseverance, and strong character.

The addition of Leal comes at a pivotal time for the program, which competes in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and the highly competitive NJCAA Region 14. For 51, the signing is not only about filling a roster spot but also about reinforcing a culture that values long-term development and team chemistry.

 

Building a Young but Ambitious Program at 51

51 launched its cross country program with ambitious goals and limited preparation time. Despite being hired late and facing the challenge of building a roster without a traditional recruiting cycle, head coach Basilio Mendoza guided both the men’s and women’s teams to national recognition during the program’s inaugural season.

According to Mendoza, the results exceeded expectations. “Last year we ended up winning the Region 14 championship and finishing 15th in the country on the men’s side,” he said. “On the women’s side, we finished 35th in the country in just two and a half months of work after being hired late with no recruiting process in a brand new cross country program”.

Those achievements laid a strong foundation for future recruiting classes and positioned 51 as an emerging contender within NJCAA cross country competition.

Leal’s commitment reflects the recruiting philosophy that has quickly become a hallmark of TSC Cross Country. Rather than focusing solely on raw athletic talent, the program prioritizes growth potential, work ethic, and attitude.

“She’s a very driven young lady,” Mendoza said. “She’s not the most naturally talented runner, but hard work beats talent that doesn’t work hard”.

Mendoza noted that Leal’s development over the past year stood out. “She improved from last year; I’ve been tracking her progress,” he explained. “She went from near the back of the pack to placing fourth in the district”.

That progression illustrates the type of upward trajectory 51 values when evaluating prospective student-athletes. For TSC Athletics, improvement and resilience often signal an athlete’s ability to adapt to the demands of collegiate competition.

Graduates excitedly celebrate underneath colorful confetti at TSC’s Fall Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, December 13, 2025. With over 300 students crossing the stage to obtain their degrees and certifications, the two ceremonies highlighted the culmination of their journeys, as well as TSC’s commitment to providing them with access to high-quality educational opportunities.

51 celebrated a milestone on Saturday, December 13, 2025, as hundreds of graduates and their families  filled the Jacob Brown Auditorium for the college’s Fall Commencement ceremonies.

The college hosted two separate ceremonies, a reflection of the continued growth of its academic and dual enrollment programs and the remarkable number of students reaching this significant milestone. A total of 347 graduates participated in the Commencement ceremonies, representing academic programs across the college and Dual Credit students from partner high schools throughout the Rio Grande Valley.

As the final graduating class before TSC enters its centennial year in 2026, the event carried a sense of history, gratitude, and anticipation for the century ahead.

The 9:30 a.m. ceremony recognized 224 graduates, including 114 students from the Division of Arts and Sciences and 110 Dual Enrollment graduates representing more than a dozen partner schools. Students from Hanna Early College High School, Rivera Early College High School, Veterans Memorial Early College High School, Pace Early College High School, Lopez Early College High School, Porter Early College High School, Port Isabel, San Benito, Harlingen South, Los Fresnos, Santa Maria, La Villa, Jubilee, and Raymondville proudly crossed the stage.

TSC President Dr. Jesús Roberto Rodriguez served as the master of ceremonies for both events, offering opening remarks that highlighted student perseverance, the support of faculty and families, and the significance of reaching this moment at the threshold of the college’s 100th year.

Board Chair Adela G. Garza, the longest-serving member of the Board of Trustees and a proud TSC alumna, shared a message rooted in personal experience and encouragement. Garza reflected on her own journey as a student who enrolled in college later in life, a decision that became the starting point of the path that eventually led her to serve as Board Chair. She spoke about the transformative impact TSC had on her life and reminded graduates that their time at the college may be the beginning of opportunities they cannot yet imagine.

The 1:30 p.m. ceremony honored 123 graduates, including 22 summer completers, 62 graduates from the Business, Education, and Technology Division, and 39 graduates from the Division of Health Professions. Many of these students are preparing to enter high-demand careers across the region, reflecting TSC’s long-standing role in strengthening the local workforce.

Joining the ceremonies to deliver a keynote address was delivered by Dr. Gilberto Flores, Jr., an Internist who divides his time between practicing medicine in the Rio Grande Valley and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dr. Flores offered an inspiring message centered on resilience, sharing candid reflections on his own early academic struggles and the shift in mindset that set him on the path toward a career in medicine:

“When you doubt yourself, keep going. When the world underestimates you, keep going. And when the dream feels too big, remind yourself that big is exactly what dreams are supposed to feel like. I stand here today, not as someone who figured it all out from the beginning, but as someone who learned that greatness is built through small, consistent acts of courage.”

As the college prepares for its centennial celebration in 2026, this class stands as a bridge between TSC’s proud past and its promising future. This latest group of graduates’ achievements embody the mission that has guided TSC since its earliest days: expanding access to education, uplifting the community, and equipping students with the skills to thrive.

Graduates from 51’s Criminal Justice Institute Police Academy program proudly display their certificates alongside TSC administration and guests on Saturday, December 6, 2025. With their newly earned certifications, the program graduates can now look ahead to taking the exams to obtain their licensure and begin applying their skills in the field of law enforcement jobs.

51 proudly celebrated the achievements of its newest law enforcement graduates during the Criminal Justice Institute’s Fall 2025 Commencement Ceremony, held on Saturday, December 6, at the TSC Performing Arts Center. The ceremony honored 40 graduates in total—32 from the Basic Peace Officer program and 8 from the Basic County Corrections Officer program, each stepping forward to begin careers rooted in service, responsibility, and community protection.

The event opened with the formal presentation of colors and the recitation of the national anthem, setting a tone of respect and tradition that carried throughout the ceremony. TSC President Dr. Jesús Roberto Rodríguez and Board of Trustees Chairwoman Adela G. Garza welcomed graduates and their families with messages of pride and encouragement, reflecting on the importance of duty, integrity, and the rigorous training that prepares each cadet for the path ahead.

This year’s keynote speaker, Chief Felix Sauceda of the Brownsville Police Department, delivered an inspiring address that drew from his 34-year career in law enforcement. Chief Sauceda spoke candidly about the realities of public service, including the sacrifices, challenges, and its immense capacity to shape men and women into strong and compassionate leaders.

“I can’t overemphasize that the challenges you will face are very real, day in and day out, so it is incumbent of you to remain prepared,” Sauceda said. “At the end of the day, whichever agency you work with, the challenges you endure and overcome throughout your career will define your legacy. Always continue to grow, always remain vigilant, well-prepared, and courageous. Your families and community depend on each and every one of you.”

Following the keynote, members of the graduating class took the stage to share their own reflections. Day Class President Jorge Lambert and Evening Class Vice President Devon Lopez looked back on the months of training, the obstacles they overcame, and the strong sense of camaraderie that developed among their cohort. Their remarks captured the collective spirit of support, resilience, and shared purpose that shaped their journey.

The ceremony continued with Cadet Alexis Salinas leading the class in reciting the Code of Ethics, reaffirming their commitment to the core values of law enforcement and the responsibility they now carry as guardians of the communities they serve.

To conclude the ceremony, each graduate was individually recognized and awarded their certificate of completion. A group of 51 students is moving one step closer to careers in high-demand technical fields after earning industry-recognized certifications through the Smart Automation Certification Alliance (SACA). The achievement highlights both the strength of TSC’s Electro-Mechanical Technician program and the growing opportunities available to students trained in automation, mechanics, and advanced industrial systems.

For students like Jesus Lopez, Manuel Lopez, Eric Saavedra, Odalys Contreras, Mario Davila, and Diego Garcia, earning their SACA credentials marks an important milestone. Each completed certifications in Programmable Controller Systems 1, Hydraulic Systems 1, and Electric Motor Control Systems 1, demonstrating mastery of essential competencies valued across a broad range of technical fields.

The Electro-Mechanical Technician program provides an introduction to complex electronic and mechanical systems, preparing students to troubleshoot and repair equipment used across modern industries. Electro-Mechanical Trainer Eutiquio Calderon explained that the program equips students with foundational skills in programmable logic controllers (PLCs), hydraulic and pneumatic systems, motor control systems, wiring and schematic interpretation, and general equipment troubleshooting.

“These students learn how to apply PLC principles, operate and maintain hydraulic and pneumatic systems, and build and troubleshoot motor controls,” Calderon said. “By the end of the course, they’re able to interpret diagrams and resolve issues in electro-mechanical equipment to ensure optimal performance and safety.”

Training begins with PLC programming, where students use laptops and dedicated PLC equipment to explore ladder logic, equipment interfacing, and real-world troubleshooting scenarios. From there, they complete 10 hands-on labs in hydraulics and pneumatics using training systems designed to walk them step-by-step through control valves, fluid power assemblies, and system operation. The course concludes with motor control training, allowing students to build electrical circuits and diagnose system failures using industry-standard equipment.

This technical foundation directly prepares students for SACA certification, which is widely recognized by employers seeking workers skilled in Industry 4.0 technologies. SACA, a nonprofit organization, develops modular certifications aligned with international skill standards and validated through hands-on evaluations and online, proctored testing. Certifications are reviewed annually to ensure they remain current with evolving industry practices.

“These credentials help students show employers that they have real, tested skills,” Calderon said. “Industry partners know what SACA represents, and they know these students can apply what they’ve learned.”

Graduates of the program are well-positioned to enter careers in renewable energy, food and product processing, general manufacturing, and the oil and gas sector. Calderon explained that demand for skilled electro-mechanical technicians is high across the state and nationwide, with many opportunities requiring relocation to North Texas or other parts of the country. To support students in their job search, he has already begun developing a list of industry contacts who are eager to review resumes from TSC graduates.

Students who complete the Electro-Mechanical Technician program can also earn an Occupational Skills Award, adding another credential to their résumés. Combined with their SACA certifications, students leave the program with strong technical preparation and industry-recognized proof of their abilities.

As industries continue to rely on automated systems, robotics, and advanced manufacturing technologies, programs like TSC’s play a vital role in building the region’s technical workforce. With hands-on training, rigorous certification opportunities, and committed instructors, students gain both the skills and confidence needed to pursue meaningful careers.

Members of Veterans Memorial High School Junior Marine Corps ROTC conducts the Posting of Colors at 51’s annual Veterans Day Ceremony on Tuesday, November 11, 2025 at the TSC Performing Arts Center. The event brings together students, faculty, administration, and members of the community to honor the service and sacrifice of those who have served and continue to serve in the United States Armed Forces.

51 honored the service and sacrifices of the nation’s veterans during its annual Veterans Day Ceremony on Monday, November 11, 2025, at the TSC Performing Arts Center, bringing together students, faculty, staff, and community members for a morning of reflection and gratitude.

The ceremony opened with warm remarks from TSC Board of Trustees Chairwoman Adela G. Garza, followed by a welcome from TSC President Dr. Jesus Roberto Rodriguez. Their messages highlighted the deep respect and appreciation the college community holds for all servicemen and women, as well as TSC’s continued commitment to supporting veterans and their educational pursuits.

U.S. Marine Corps veteran and TSC student Roberto Vela led the invocation and Pledge of Allegiance, setting a reverent tone for the morning. The Veterans Memorial High School Junior Marine Corps ROTC were present to perform the Posting of Colors, followed by a stirring violin rendition of the “Star-Spangled Banner” by Daniel Perez.

This year’s keynote address was delivered by Oralia Fernandez, a distinguished U.S. Army and Navy veteran who also served as Superintendent of the Palo Alto Battlefield National Historical Park for 28 years. Fernandez shared her personal story of service, detailing her time in the National Reserves, her overseas assignments, and the challenges faced by military personnel serving far from their loved ones. Her remarks touched upon both the hardship and the profound pride that come with a life of service, as well as the unique combination of strength, courage, and resilience which have long defined America’s veterans.

The ceremony concluded with a moving performance of Taps, played by TSC Music Instructor Victor Martinez, accompanied by music program students Anthony Hudgins and Andrew Joseph Angeles, as attendees stood in solemn remembrance of those who gave their lives in service to the nation.

The event was coordinated by Francisco Quezada, a United States Air Force veteran and Coordinator of TSC’s Veterans Success Center, which provides critical resources and guidance for student veterans transitioning to civilian and academic life.

“At the Veterans Success Center, we provide resources for veterans and their dependents to be able to use their state and federal benefits so that they can pay for their tuition and any living expenses they may have,” said Quezada. “We provide them with access to a computer lab, printing resources and tutoring resources. We also work with different organizations in the community like United Way and Veterans Upward Bound, so we’re able to refer them to those resources as well.”

Through ceremonies like this, 51 reaffirms its lasting commitment to honoring the legacy of veterans and supporting those who continue to serve our country through education, leadership, and community engagement.

The MOU signifies the start of a partnership between the two institutions which will allow TSC graduates, alumni, and staff who have earned transferrable associate degrees to further their studies at NU, along with the benefit of tuition discounts relative to the type of degree they choose to pursue

The signing ceremony, held today at the TSC Performing Arts Center, formalized a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the two institutions aimed at improving access, affordability, and student success. The spirit of remembrance came alive at 51 on Monday, November 11, as students, faculty, and community members gathered for the college’s annual Día de los Muertos celebration. The evening painted a vibrant picture of the dedicated preservation of local customs and heritage, as participants honored the memories of loved ones who have passed while celebrating the cultural traditions that continue to connect generations throughout our community.

The festivities began in the courtyard between North and South Hall, where volunteers welcomed guests with face painting, electronic candles, and paper marigold crafting stations. Students from eight Texas ACE schools joined in the creative energy, fashioning the iconic orange flowers that symbolize remembrance and renewal. Setting the tone for the evening, Porter Early College High School’s Conjunto band, La Leyenda, filled the courtyard with lively and soulful music.

As the sun began to sink below the horizon, the crowd gathered in a procession to begin their march across campus, candles glowing softly in the twilight. Their path led them through the Oliveira Student Center, where altars adorned with photographs and offerings stood as poignant tributes to those who are no longer with us. Emerging from the building, participants were greeted by TSC President Dr. Jesús Roberto Rodríguez and Board of Trustees Chair Adela G. Garza, who shared brief remarks about the significance of honoring both heritage and community through traditions like this one.

The celebration continued with a spirited series of performances, including Ballet Folklórico dancers from Hanna Early College High School, TSC’s Mariachi Escorpión ensemble, and the Los Fresnos Conjunto Halcón. The music and movement brought a joyful close to an evening rooted in love and cultural pride.

To end the night, attendees gathered together to enjoy traditional pan de muerto and hot chocolate, provided by the TSC Student Life department, reminders of the warmth that comes from honoring the past as a community united in spirit and celebration.

A traditional Dia de los Muertos altar adorned with candles and photos sits in the interior of TSC’s Oliveira Student Center Building, welcoming all to view and pay their respects. The Newman Building on the 51 Ft. Brown campus serves as the headquarters for the college’s Office of Safety & Risk Management. Through careful guidelines and diligent observance, the office and its team go to great lengths to ensure the safety and protection of all who visit, study, and work on campus. Safety Week is the office’s key annual event to spread awareness of their efforts and further educate the public on how to recognize and respond to emergency situations.

51 kicked off its annual Safety Week on Monday, October 20, putting a spotlight on the comprehensive safety and security measures that keep the campus community protected year-round.

Organized by the Office of Safety and Risk Management, Safety Week is a dedicated time to promote awareness, preparedness, and practical safety skills for students, faculty, and staff. Throughout the week, the office will coordinate a series of events and training sessions designed to help participants build confidence and learn life-saving techniques in emergency situations.

Some examples of the sessions are CRASE (Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events) training, CPR/Stop the Bleed instruction, and fire safety demonstrations, each offering vital learning experiences led by trained professionals. In addition to in-person sessions, the office will share important safety information through email, social media, and campus alerts to further promote awareness and readiness across the college.

“Safety is something we take very seriously,” noted Benjamin Gabbert, TSC Coordinator of Emergency Management. “Our mission is to protect the well-being of everyone who works, learns, or visits 51 through prevention, education, and collaboration.”

To achieve these goals, the department oversees a broad range of responsibilities, including coordinating campus security through partnerships with law enforcement and first responder agencies, managing the RAVE Alert Emergency Notification System, fire safety, and maintaining environmental health and emergency response programs. Additionally, the department maintains Annual Security and Fire Safety Report and daily crime logs in accordance with Clery Act requirements.

Additionally, cylindrical phone towers are strategically placed in various locations around campus, providing a direct line of communication with responders in case of an emergency. Students, faculty, and staff can also submit concerns through an online .

TSC’s safety infrastructure also includes several unique features, such as off-duty Brownsville Police Officers who work alongside campus security personnel, and building-specific safety walkthroughs focused on preparedness for active attack or evacuation situations. The college’s focused dedication to safety measures has even been recognized, with TSC Emergency Management Coordinator Nathan Flores receiving the Collaborative Community Partnership award from the Texas State – Texas School Safety Center in 2024.

Together, these functions ensure that the college can prevent, detect, report, and respond effectively to incidents while maintaining compliance and community awareness. Through initiatives like Safety Week, 51 continues to strengthen its commitment to providing a safe, informed, and prepared campus environment for our community.

Members of 51’s Student Leadership Academy (SLA) participated in an informative and engaging session on etiquette and professionalism on Thursday, October 16, 2025 at the Oliveira Student Services Center Building. The session, delivered by guest speaker and TSC instructor of Organizational Management Dr. Patricia M. Blanco, gave students an in-depth look into the standards of professionalism that are a staple of the modern day workplace.

51’s Office of Student Life hosted another installment of its Distinguished Speaker Series on Thursday, October 16, 2025, in Conference Room 3 on the second floor of the Oliveira Student Services Building for the college’s Student Leadership Academy (SLA), continuing its tradition of connecting students with college leaders and professionals.

This session featured Dr. Patricia M. Blanco, instructor of Organizational Management at TSC, who spoke to students about the importance of etiquette and professionalism, which are both crucial elements of personal and career success. Her presentation covered topics such as proper workplace conduct, professional communication, and appropriate attire. Dr. Blanco emphasized how these elements work in tandem to help build confidence and credibility for students who are preparing to enter a professional environment as part of their career pathways.

“Professionalism and etiquette are essential because they prepare students not just for academic success but also for lifelong careers and personal growth,” said Dr. Blanco. “These skills build the foundation for how individuals present themselves, interact with others, and navigate diverse professional and social settings.”

The weekly presentations feature guest speakers from across the college, typically offering around nine sessions each semester. The sessions are just one of the many different professional development opportunities facilitated for the SLA, who regularly attend a variety of workshops, conferences, and special events to help build and strengthen their leadership skills. The students who attend the speaker sessions and complete 20 volunteer hours receive a certificate of completion, recognizing their dedication to leadership development and community involvement.

The series is coordinated by TSC Student Services, who strive to continuously create new opportunities for students to engage with college professionals in open, conversational, and informative settings. “These sessions are designed to help students gain firsthand insights into areas like leadership, professionalism, and networking while also preparing for their future academic and career success,” said Sophie Vega, TSC Student Services Specialist, emphasizing the many important skills that the students develop over time.

By being a part of events like the Distinguished Speaker Series, TSC’s Student Leadership Academy continues to strengthen a culture of mentorship and personal development, empowering students to take initiative and develop the professional tools needed to thrive in their future careers beyond college.
