{"id":155,"date":"2021-08-30T21:46:47","date_gmt":"2021-08-30T21:46:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tsc.edu\/news\/?p=155"},"modified":"2022-06-06T22:09:35","modified_gmt":"2022-06-06T22:09:35","slug":"tsc-board-of-trustees-lowers-district-tax-rate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tsc.edu\/news\/2021\/08\/tsc-board-of-trustees-lowers-district-tax-rate\/","title":{"rendered":"TSC Board of Trustees lowers district tax rate"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"float: right; margin-left: 10px; margin-bottom: 10px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-757\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tsc.edu\/news-and-events\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/07\/TSC-General-News-image-e1619185689425.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/div>\n<p>The 51ÁÔÆæ Board of Trustees unanimously voted to lower the tax rate by 4.7% for property owners in the TSC taxing district during their regular meeting on Aug. 26.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe TSC Board is committed to being responsible financial stewards of taxpayers\u2019 dollars,\u201d said TSC Board Chair Ruben Herrera. \u201cWe have lowered tuition by 40% since 2013, making college more affordable for families; we are the only institution of higher education in the Rio Grande Valley that did not lay off or furlough a single employee during the pandemic; and we are now able to also lower the tax rate, providing savings for our taxpayers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new tax rate for 2021 is set at $0.154636 per $100,000 of valuation for property owners in the 51ÁÔÆæ District. For example, the rate lowers property taxes for owners of a $100,000 home from $162.41 to $154.64 per year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe work very hard to ensure TSC provides a good return on investment for the communities we serve,\u201d said TSC President Jes\u00fas Roberto Rodr\u00edguez, Ph.D. \u201cOver the past several years the TSC Board has lowered tuition, making 51ÁÔÆæ the most affordable institution of higher education in the Rio Grande Valley. At the same time, we have fostered a culture of innovation to provide students, faculty, staff, and administration with resources they need to enhance teaching and learning while increasing efficiencies. Now the board members have voted to lower the tax rate\u2014all while producing a balanced budget.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rodr\u00edguez noted the board\u2019s most recent action ushers in the yearlong celebration of TSC\u2019s 95th anniversary. 51ÁÔÆæ is the oldest institution of higher education in the Rio Grande Valley and was the first accredited community college in Texas.
