The proposals will be built and auction to raise funds for the RGV Humane Society<\/em><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=”2_3,1_3″ _builder_version=”4.17.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”2_3″ _builder_version=”4.17.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.17.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n Students in\u00a0<\/span>Mr.\u00a0<\/span>Sergio Lainez\u2019s Design II architecture course at 51ÁÔÆæ\u00a0<\/span>presented their\u00a0<\/span>drafts of\u00a0<\/span>original and creative\u00a0<\/span>dog<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>houses<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>The students participating are in their second semester in the program.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n Following feedback from their instructor a<\/span>nd\u00a0<\/span>other\u00a0<\/span>members<\/span>\u00a0of\u00a0<\/span>The American Institute of Architects Lower Rio Grande Valley Chapter<\/span>, students will fully construct their models.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n As part of the learning-service projects, the dog houses will be auctioned at the Rio Grande Valley Humane Society\u2019s annual Wine and Whiskers fundraiser.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n Gabriella Martinez\u00a0<\/span>was one of the students who presented and heard feedback along with teammate Fernanda Villarreal. Their doghouse was made to be used as a table with storage built in for dog toys o<\/span>r other<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>uses.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cIt was difficult to come up with a mode<\/span>l<\/span>,\u201d Martinez said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>We were inspired by a treehouse and ended up going a different way and decided on this one that works as a table<\/span>\u00a0and has several\u00a0<\/span>functi<\/span>ons.<\/span>\u00a0It is a long process to reach a design proposal.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n Students were divided in the class were divided into eight pairs and had only two weeks to develop a design<\/span>\u00a0with specific height, width and depth\u00a0<\/span>requirements<\/span>\u00a0along with a model and poster to explain the design.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n The architecture critics did not hold back in the feedback, but this is an important part of the process when preparing students for tight deadlines and demanding\u00a0<\/span>customers<\/span>\u00a0or contractors in the field.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n Maria\u00a0<\/span>Sustaeta<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>serves as executive director of the local chapter of\u00a0<\/span>the American Institute of Architects<\/span>. She explained that\u00a0<\/span>Barkitecture<\/span>\u00a02023 was the\u00a0<\/span>brainchild\u00a0<\/span>of Mr. Lainez who is a member of the LRGV<\/span>–<\/span>AIA<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cWe have\u00a0<\/span>initiative<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0throughout the year as part of\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0services\u00a0<\/span>we provide<\/span>,\u201d she said.<\/span>\u00a0\u201c<\/span>One of my favorites is supporting future architects from the lower Rio Grande Valley.\u00a0<\/span>[Mr. Lainez]\u00a0<\/span>wanted to involve the students in the design process and prepare them for presenting concepts and ideas. We support\u00a0<\/span>th<\/span>ese<\/span>\u00a0type<\/span>s\u00a0<\/span>of\u00a0<\/span>activit<\/span>ies\u00a0<\/span>and event<\/span>s<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>W<\/span>e also have a great scholarship program t<\/span>hat helps students from this area, no matter if they are two-year students<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>four-year students or even\u00a0<\/span>master’s<\/span>\u00a0students.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n Mr. Lainez<\/span>\u2019s instructions were to design and build\u00a0<\/span>an<\/span>\u00a0indoor\u00a0<\/span>doghouse<\/span>\u00a0with 3\u2019 x 5 x 3\u2019 dimensions in two weeks. After feedback,\u00a0<\/span>the pairs of students are given another two weeks to build the doghouse.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cThe goal of being an architect is absolutely being creative<\/span>,\u201d Lainez said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>We are problem-<\/span>solvers,<\/span>\u00a0and we try to solve problems creatively.<\/span>\u00a0Everything that they design has come from them<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n He also explained that\u00a0<\/span>design criticism may come off as blunt or harsh but getting a design approved in the real world is in the\u00a0<\/span>hand<\/span>\u00a0of the\u00a0<\/span>client<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cAs students, the biggest thing to learn is that your design fits you and your personality but ultimately, we are designing\u00a0<\/span>for<\/span>\u00a0a client<\/span>,\u201d\u00a0<\/span>He<\/span>\u00a0said. \u201c<\/span>They might not like your personality o<\/span>r what you are designing so you have to be able to be\u00a0<\/span>adaptable and flexible to the design.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n Students will present their final dog houses on April 2 at ITECC.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_3″ _builder_version=”4.17.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_gallery gallery_ids=”2431,2432,2434″ posts_number=”3″ _builder_version=”4.17.4″ _module_preset=”default” title_font_size=”9px” global_colors_info=”{}”][\/et_pb_gallery][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Students from Sergio Lainez’s Design II architecture class pose after presenting their designs of dog houses.
