TSC SET-B Lecture Hall, August 8th, 2024<\/em> – 51ÁÔÆæ recently celebrated the graduation of its latest Licensed Vocational Nursing (LVN) cohort with a formal pinning ceremony at the SET-B Lecture Hall. The event honored seven graduates and featured speeches from TSC Board of Trustees Chair Adela Garza, Director of Associate Degree Nursing Mary Kasprisin, and ADN instructor Linda Hinojosa. Also in attendance were newly elected board trustee Edward Camarillo M.P.P.M., TSC Interim Vice President of Instruction Dr. Brian McCormack, Dean of Health Professions Dr. David Pearse, ADN Instructors Elizabeth Lugo and Sharla Sosa. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In a special touch, the graduating class selected their keynote speaker, choosing their instructor, Dr. Bernard Scott, who delivered a heartfelt address reflecting on the depth of their educational journey. Dr. Scott\u2019s speech encompassed the trials and triumphs the students had undergone throughout their rigorous training, giving the gathered audience of friends and family members a better idea of the enormous commitment LVNs are required to make as they perfect their skills.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOnce a semester starts, it is like a train leaving the station, and once rolling, the train barrels forward, stopping for no one \u2013 not for the instructors or students \u2013 until it reaches its destination,\u201d Dr. Scott began. \u201cThere is a relentless pressure to stay with the herd. You must keep up or be left behind. People from other fields are often shocked at the rapid pace and sheer amount of hard work required from the nursing program.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He also spoke of the special camaraderie that develops among cohorts in the program, recalling amusing anecdotes before addressing each student individually. He spoke fondly of memories created throughout the semesters and gave heartfelt words of encouragement as they prepared to embark on their next journey in healthcare.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI can safely predict that your work will be meaningful and fulfilling. I know that you will make a big difference in the lives of your patients and a positive contribution to your communities,\u201d remarked Dr. Scott.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

LVNs are among the most in-demand positions within the medical field. A full-fledged LVN is expected to perform a multitude of specific tasks in a medical setting, such as recording a patient\u2019s vital signs, fielding information about patient health concerns, attending to wound dressings, collecting essential data, and much more. Additionally, LVNs should display a high level of patient comfort care, showing empathy and developing a positive rapport with the patients under their care.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The students were called up after Dr. Scott\u2019s speech to officially receive their pins and certificates. This was followed by an announcement that of the graduating class, TSC Associate Degree Nursing instructor Samantha Martinez was selected as the recipient of the Clinical Excellence Award, which is given to students who display exceptional skills throughout their training.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While this marks the end of these students\u2019 time in the LVN program, it is not the end for many of them. In addition to preparing to take the NCLEX (National Council Licensure Examination), some students, such as new graduate Fatima Espino, are already looking forward to taking the next step in their educational journey.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt was difficult and a lot of work, but we got through it. We were fortunate to have instructors like Dr. Scott and Ms. Sharla Sosa, who were always there for us,” said Espino. “Now I\u2019d like to get into maternal nursing, which takes a bachelor’s and master’s degree, but I\u2019m determined to get there.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
