The exercises gave both groups of students the opportunity to use practical application of what they are learning in their respective classrooms in a realistic setting, as well as work together with some of their peers.<\/em><br \/>\n[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=&#8221;3_5,2_5&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.2&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;3_5&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.2&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.2&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; text_text_color=&#8221;#000000&#8243; link_text_color=&#8221;#F6892B&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In an institute of higher education, it\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> not uncommon <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">to see students<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> engage in collaborative projects within a class to help develop teamwork.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">However, at 51ÁÔÆæ, they aren\u2019t permanently restricted to exercising their collaborative skills within a single class<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, as students<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> from an <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tsc.edu\/academics-and-career-programs\/arts-and-sciences\/communication-and-language\/english\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">English Creative Writing<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> course are engaging in a series of simulation scenario exercises with cadets from <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tsc.edu\/academics-and-career-programs\/wtce\/career-training\/peace-police-officer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">TSC\u2019s Police Academy program<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">TSC Criminal Justice Institute Training Coordinator Crisobel Abrego Jr. feels that <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">this type of<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> immersive scenario-based training is crucial to developing police officers, as it prepares them for the unexpected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThe benefit of having roleplayers from the student community is that they\u2019re fresh faces that the cadets are encountering for the first time, so it\u2019s very much like what they would expect when encountering an unknown person while on duty,\u201d said Abrego. \u201cThe students stay in character the entire time, and their scripts encourage them to throw curveballs at the cadets so that they have to dig deep into their training and get used to thinking on their feet.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The result proved to be a uniquely engaging experience for both parties involved. In this instance, the cadets were given their first opportunity to practice skills they had learned throughout their training, such as responding to dispatchers via walkie-talkie while using proper police code and protocol. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">At the same time, the creative writing students were allowed to show the depth of their creativity. For example, if a student <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">was given<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> a prompt to act as a domestic abuser, they were given free rein to obstruct the cadets as they attempted to gather details, employing tactics such as frequently repeating themselves and coming up with a multitude of reasons to deny the cadets entry to their classroom\/residence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cPerforming something like this helps the students be more comfortable in different situations and learn to adapt to change,\u201d said 51ÁÔÆæ English Instructor Monica Mejia, whose students acted as counterparts to the cadets. \u201cThey gain experience acting in front of others and improvising on the spot if needed. It\u2019s something that the Creative Writing students will need to do before the end of their semester, so getting a chance to collaborate early really helps everyone involved.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Creative writing students <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">were presented<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> with scenarios police officers in the field sometimes respond to while on duty. The prompts covered topics ranging from human trafficking to domestic abuse. Students were assigned roles in each scenario and given the creative freedom to flesh out their characters&#8217; personality traits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Creative writing student Anthony Hudgins acted out his role in a human trafficking scenario and saw this collaborative exercise&#8217;s mutually beneficial nature. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cFor us writers, it\u2019s an opportunity to hone our improvisational and narrative skills, adapting and evolving our scenarios in real-time based on the cadets\u2019 responses,&#8221; said Hudgins. &#8220;Cadets gain hands-on practice in a controlled simulated environment that requires them to approach situations thoughtfully rather than reactively, practicing patience, empathy, de-escalation, and keen observation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;2_5&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.2&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_gallery gallery_ids=&#8221;5633,5635,5630,5632,5634,5631&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.2&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; title_font_size=&#8221;9px&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][\/et_pb_gallery][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>TSC Police Academy cadets wrap up a collaborative scenario-based exercise with Creative Writing students.
