BROWNSVILLE (51ÁÔÆæ) \u2013 51ÁÔÆæ students thinking about future job opportunities took advantage of a unique chance to polish their interview skills at TSC\u2019s Interview Practicum held at Jacob Brown Auditorium.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span>The students took part in mock job interviews with representatives from local businesses.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cSome financial institutions here, locally, you have TVC, the Texas Veterans Commission, UTRGV, the City of Brownsville and Cameron County as well, along with the Workforce Solutions Cameron too,\u201d said Josue Silguero, TSC\u2019s Director of Career and Employment services, which organized the event.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n TSC Board of Trustees Chairwoman Adela Garza\u202ftook part in the event as an interviewer. As a business owner, she took joy in offering advice to a student who is seeking a business degree.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI told him when you work for Corporate America, it\u2019s a different set of rules than when you establish your own business,\u201d Garza said. \u201cIn every job you have, you\u00a0have to\u00a0take your heart with you, your compassion, and your professionalism. And that follows you forever.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u202fJennifer Sanchez, a first-year student in TSC\u2019s Child Development Early Childhood (CDEC)\u00a0program\u00a0was grateful for the advice she received.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI thought it was really interesting,\u201d Sanchez said.\u00a0\u201cIt was\u00a0really good. It did help me for what potential employers would say in an interview.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Sanchez was interviewed by Rusty\u00a0Brechot, Cameron County Market President for Lone Star National Bank.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cSomething he did say was that my greatest strength is me, how I am, how I present myself, and how I stay honest\u00a0to\u00a0myself,\u201d Sanchez added.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cEveryone is a little bit nervous when they do something like this,\u00a0Brechot\u00a0said. \u201cIf you can break that in the beginning,\u00a0you\u2019ll\u00a0end up with a wonderful interview and\u00a0you\u2019ll\u00a0get to know the truth. I think a lot of what we talked about as well is being honest and having confidence. You know, all these different things, as well as what is on paper.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Nadia Sanchez, who is also in the CDEC program, hopes to one day be a director for an early childhood center. She says the event also helped her learn more about how she can improve for real-world interviews.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI was trying to calm down, but still, I was nervous,\u201d Sanchez said. \u201cTrying to work on my body movements and they said my voice was a little lower. Vela and\u00a0Roussett\u00a0earned credits at TSC before embarking on their careers.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span>\u201cI was happy to do it,\u201d said Vela, who is Workforce Solutions Cameron\u2019s Chief Executive Officer. \u201cThe experience was gratifying and it keeps you grounded. Because if you\u2019re in the workforce, you know, I rep the workforce and our team, sometimes we get caught up with the day-to-day. This reconnected me with the whole reason we do the work in the first place.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Roussett, a Student\u00a0HireAbility\u00a0Navigator for Workforce Solutions Cameron, has worked with TSC students in various programs in the past.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span>\u201cI love this institution,\u201d said\u00a0Roussett. \u201cWhen I first graduated from high school, I came here and it gave me my basic training that I needed to start my career.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span>Roussett, who graduated from Texas Woman\u2019s University with a degree in social work, was impressed by the preparation methods of the students she interviewed.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span>\u201cIf something is not clear, the students were letting me know that they do research and study policies, study data, study how things have been done before,\u201d\u00a0Roussett\u00a0added.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n In addition to\u00a0mock\u00a0job interviews, participants were also given an opportunity to take professional headshots.
